PROJECT DETAILS
Geometry in Construction is an alternative approach to learning Geometry that is available as an option for students taking Geometry this year at Mountain View High School. Ms. De Coste and Mr. Luster have partnered together to teach the Geometry objectives infused into Construction. Students enroll for 1 credit of Geometry and 1 credit of Construction. They are assigned a 3 hour block of time every other day. The course is designed around the naturally occurring steps in designing and building of a home. Students see the mathematics in context. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to continue into Algebra 2.
In addition to the course, guest speakers speak about careers such as: engineering, architecture, surveying, real estate, marketing, construction management, interior design, heavy equipment operations, construction trades and landscape design. Several field trips are scheduled including the high school construction career day hosted by the Colorado Builder’s Association in Denver, modular home factory, ropes course, and construction sites.
The capstone project and the highlight of the class is the building of a house. The construction of the house will start beginning of October The house will be built to the IRC Building Code. The house will be sold in the spring with the proceeds from the sale funding the next year’s activities. If additional grants are secured, we will look at building a small affordable housing unit for a low income family in Loveland.
